Original Hymn

All students will be required to write an original hymn. Follow these specific guidelines:

  • Choose a topic.
  • The hymn should be in strophic form with a minimum of TWO STANZAS.
  • Indicate the METER of your hymn and a SUGGESTED TUNE under the TITLE.
  • The hymn should utilize RHYME SCHEMES and various POETIC DEVICES discussed in class.
  • Use contemporary language (no thee’s and thou’s).
  • Use inclusive language.
  • Writing an original tune is optional and will not add any points to the grading of your hymn.
  • If you do not write an original tune, RECOMMEND A TUNE.

See Writing Hymns.

The Original Hymn will be due on the date and time indicated in the Class Schedule.

Here is an example of how your hymn should be typed and submitted:

Sing and Be glad
(10.8.10.8 with Ref. Suggested tune: SENECA)

This is the day that God has created,
Let us rejoice, be glad in it.
This is the day we all have awaited,
Open your hearts, sing praise to God!

Ref. Sing and be glad! A new day is dawning, Alleluia!

This is the gate that God has erected,
 Enter with thanks and righteousness.
This is the stone the builders rejected,
 Now it becomes the cornerstone.

Ref. Sing and be glad! A new day is dawning, Alleluia!

This is the work that God has been doing,
Marvelous the sight before our eyes.
This is the light the Spirit is showing:
Open your eyes sing praise to God!

Ref. Sing and be glad! A new day is dawning, Alleluia!
