Hymn Analyses

Students are required to analyze 5 hymns through the course of the semester. That's roughly ONE every other week after the completion of the introductory material.

Use the HYMN ANALYSIS FORM which has been provide for you. When submitted, his ONLINE FORM will e-mail the information to the instructor and a copy to the student at the e-mail address which is enteed on the formr.

Here are some general guidelines to follow:

- In the parts that require more than just a word or phrase answer, please write in a formal, academic style. Careless work (misspelled words, etc.) will result in a lowered grade.

- The Hymn Analysis will be due on the date indicated in the Schedule of Classes.


- Check the HYMN ANALYSIS LIST to see examples of hymns which have already been analyzed. DO NOT choose one of these hymns to analyze:

Your finished hymn analyses may be posted on this site at the end of the semester.

- Choose one (1) hymn from ONE of the following categories (5 altogether):

- A Greek hymn from before 1000
- A Latin hymn from before 1550
- A German Reformation hymn(chorale) from before 1700
- An English Metrical Psalm from before 1700
- A hymn by Charles Wesley
- A hymn by Isaac Watts
- Any gospel song
- An American folk hymn
- Any hymn by ONE of the following:

F. Pratt Green
Brian Wren
Thomas Troeger
Ruth Duck
Shirley Erena Murray
Carl F. Daw

- Any hymn of your choice.
