Jury Examination
The final examination for private applied study in piano for piano
majors, principals, and minors is the "jury examination." Juries
are scheduled at the end of the semester usually on the Thursday after
classes end. Juries are 8 minutes in length for a 30 minute lesson and
up to 15 minutes in length for a 50 minute lesson. A JURY
is an opportunity for the student to be evaluated in a performance
situation by a group of faculty. All assigned repertory will
be heard on the jury examination. Repertory which has not been assigned
by the private teacher will not be heard on the jury. A minimum of two
selections is required of all principals and minors.
Overall evaluation of the jury is made on the basis of:
- appropriate repertory for the degree and semester.
- successful performance
- subjective factors (musicianship, expression, individuality, etc.)
The jury GRADE will be a letter grade which is the average of
all the individual grades of the faculty present at the jury. The jury
grade will be averaged along with the applied grade according to this
percentage:
weekly private lesson grade = 75%
jury grade = 25 %.
Failure to show up for a jury will constitute an automatic F for the
semester grade.
Proper attire should be worn for the jury examination. See General
Expectations.
