Grading Procedure

The Mid-term grade will be a simple subjective evaluation by the instructor of the student's progress up to that point. Mid-term grades will not be determined from weekly evaluations or grade reports, but will be a subjectively frank evaluation of the student's progress.

Weekly lessons will be evaluated according to the criteria described below, i.e., there will be an objective weekly evaluation resulting in a specific grade.

The overall semester grade for private applied study (principals and minors) will determined by the following:

Private Lesson Grade 75%
Jury Grade 25%

Private Lesson Grade (75% of overall grade). For all private piano principals and minors of Dr. Landes, the WEEKLY Private Lesson portion of the SEMESTER grade after Mid-term will be determined by the average of the following:

Meeting repertory memorization goals for the semester: 20% of the Private Lesson

Meeting technical goals for the semester: 50% of the Private Lesson

Subjective evaluation (of overall progress for the semester): 30% of the Private Lesson

The Jury Grade (25% of overall grade). All principals are required to take a final "Jury" examination at the end of the semester. Juries usually take place on Thursday of exam week in Harton Concert Hall. A sign-up sheet will be posted on the Piano Bulletin Board a couple weeks before the Jury exam.

Your Jury grade will constitute 25% of your overall grade for the semester. When you play your requirements for your jury, there will be at least three piano faculty present and each faculty will give an independent SUBJECTIVE grade for your playing on that day. The grades of the various jurors are averaged together for the cumulative jury grade.
