The Four Seasons of Marrcrest
by
W. Daniel Landes
The Four Seasons of Marrcrest is a four-movement
suite for orchestra and piano written for the dedication
of the completion of the restoration of the historic home,
Marrcrest, located atop Signal Mountain near Chattanooga,
Tennessee. In the manner of a Tone Poem, the
four movements of the work depicts life and activities at
Marrcrest during the four seasons of the year and consequently
these are the four movements: Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer.
Cast in a classical/popular style, The Four
Seasons of Marrcrest is characterized by lush beautiful
melodies woven between the orchestra and the piano. The
first movement (Fall) introduces the 'Marrcrest Theme' and
depicts the beautiful setting of the Marrcrest estate surrounded
by its gardens and ancient trees in the colorful glory of
a bright Fall day. The second movement (Winter) depicts
the full fury of a snowy winter day atop windswept Signal
Mountain. The third movement (Spring) is a slow and lyrical
lullaby painting a picture of the quiet and inevitable return
of Spring complete with flowering dogwoods, redbuds and
fruit trees. The final movement (Summer) is a broad and
sweeping depiction of the stately beauty that is Marrcrest.
