John Wesley

John Wesley (1703-1791) is important in the history of hymnody primarily as a translator of German and Latin hymns into English. In addition, he edited and published the hymns of his brother, Charles. Some of John Wesley's best known translations include:

Jesus, thy boundless love to me (original German by Paul Gerhart) MH 183
Give to the winds your fear (original German by Paul Gerhart) MH 129
O thou to whose all-searching sight (original German by Nicholas von Zinzendorf)

The life story of the Wesley brothers is remarkable, and even more so when one realizes that Charles Wesley had never written a hymn before his conversion experience. However, he went on to write over 6500 hymns on hundreds of scripture texts and on every conceivable phase of Christian experience and Methodist theology.
