Communicating Theology through Hymns

Many scholars have stated boldy that the majority of Christians get their theological ideas more from the hymns they sing than from the sermons they hear. See Hymns are Theological. For example, when one thinks of specific theological ideas a particular hymn text often comes to mind:

A hymn book is really a book of theology for the people. However, the hymnal is often overlooked as a means of teaching Christian doctrine. The Table of Contents and the Topical Index of the hymnal is an outline of the theology of the group which produced the hymnal.
