Claude Goudimel
(c. 1514 - 1572)

In the history of Metrical Psalmody, Claude Goudimel (c. 1505-1572) is remembered for having prepared the final musical version of the Genevan Psalter. In addition, he prepared harmonizaions for the Psalm tunes. It has been suggested that Goudimel was the teacher of Palistrina. However, that has long been discounted. Goudimel's Latin works are extremely concise and concentrated, and his numerous chansons, spiritual as well as secular, are little known but well worth attention. He was a victim of the St. Bartholomew's Day massacres that decimated the Huguenot population of Lyon in 1572.
