Religious Trends in England ca. 1600 - 1700

1600 – The Dissenting movement began. The Dissenters didn’t believe that the Church of England should dominate all religious life.

1689 – Parliament passed the Act of Toleration that allowed Dissenters to have their own worship services.

After about 1700 Religious societies formed to encourage discipleship and personal growth. These societies included the S.P.C.K., the Society for Propagation of Christian Knowledge, and the S.P.G., the Society for Propagation of the Gospel.

Communion participation dropped as preaching became more central to worship.

Truth is seen in what is natural and reasonable as well as through revelation.

Salvation involves morality.

Deism – the idea that God created the world and then stepped back.
