Hugh T. McElrath

Hugh T. McElrath retired as the V.V. Cooke professor of church music
at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky,
but continues to serve as a senior professor of church music at the
same institution. He attended Murray State University, The southern
Baptist Theological Seminary, and The University of Rochester. He
has also done additional study in Italy, England, and Switzerland.
His published works include How to Use the Hymnal,
Great Hymns of Praise, The History of our Christian
Faith in Hymns, and numerous articles, He is coauthor, with
Harry Eskew, of Sing With Understanding: an Introduction to
Christian Hymnology (1980); and a writer for the Handbook
to The Baptist Hymnal.
He was a member of the hymnal committees for the Baptist Hymnal,
1975 and The Baptist Hymnal, 1991. He has served as
president of the Southern Baptist Church Music Conference and editor
of the Southern Baptist Church Music Journal. He is
a Fellow of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada;
a recipient of the Hines Sims Award, and the Findley and Louvenia
Edge Award for Excellence in Teaching.
