George Root

George Root (1820-1895). Root was a fellow teacher with Thomas Hastings and William Bradbury in Lowell Mason’s normal institute (a more permanent and scientifically improved version of the singing school) in Boston. His career parallels that of many early gospel song composers; Root too had an early ambition to become a musician. He received a good musical education and was honored with and advanced degree; he was continually active in the Sunday school and church music programs as well as writing pouplar songs. He is well known for such songs as

- Ring the Bells of heaven BH 428
- Why do you wait
