Hymn Analyses

Students will be required to anaylze 5 hymns through the course of the semester.

Use the HYMN ANALYSIS FORM which has been provide for you in electronic format. You can either:

- give the instructor your email address and he will email you the form.
- bring a diskette to class and the instructor will make a copy of the file for you.
- down load the form NOW:

HYMN ANALYSIS FORM - in PDF format. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader.

The PDF file format is a univeral, cross-platform format and can be opend on any computer (IBM, Macintosh) providing you have installed Adobe's, Acrobat Reader application. Newer computers have this already installed when you purchase them, so in most cases once you have downloaded the file it may open by itself, or you can simply double-click on the file icon after you have downloaded it and Acrobat Reader will launch automatically.

All hymn analyses must be TYPED using this form. Hand written hymn analyses will not be accepted.

If none of the above options work for you, tell the instructor and he will give you a hard copy which you can re-type in a word processer.

Submit the Hymn Analysis in one of these ways:

- print out the form and bring a hard-copy to class.
- convert your word processing document to PDF format and enclose it in an email to the instructor.
- enclose your WORD document in an email to the instructor

Here are some general guidelines to follow:

- In the parts that require more than just a word or phrase answer, please write in a formal, academic style. Careless work (misspelled words, etc.) will result in a lowered grade.

- The Hymn Analysis will be due on the date indicated in the Schedule of Classes. Hard copies and electronic copies are due by the end of class on the date indicated. Hymn analyses submitted late will be accepted but will be subject to late assignment policies.


- Check the Hymn Analysis List page to see examples of hymns which have already been analyzed. DO NOT choose one of these hymns to analyze. Your finished hymn analyses may be posted on this site at the end of the semester.

- Choose one (1) hymn from ONE of the following categories (5 altogether):

- Early Greek
- Latin hymn from before 1000
- German Reformation hymn(chorale) from before 1700
- English Metrical Psalm from before 1600
- A hymn by Charles Wesley
- A hymn by Isaac Watts
- Any gospel song
- An American folk hymn
- Any hymn by ONE of the following:

F. Pratt Green
Brian Wren
Thomas Troeger
Ruth Duck
Shirley Erena Murray
Carl F. Daw

- Any hymn of your choice.
