Course Description

DIV 2998 The History and Use of Hymns in Worship.


A survey of the hymnody of the Western Church from its historical roots in Hebrew worship to the present. The course will include a study of early Greek and Latin hymns, hymns of the Reformation including Genevan and English Psalters, evangelical British hymnody through the 19th century, early American singing school and folk hymnody, Gospel hymnody, African-American hymnody, and contemporary hymnody including praise and worship music. There will be an emphasis on the practical use of hymns in worship.
